Swahili is a Bantu language and has its origins in the 10th century on the eastern coast of the African continent, stretching from southern Somalia to Mozambique. The language is called “Kiswahili” by the natives. Kiswahili is known to be a language of commerce in this region. Indeed, the language facilitated exchanges between the Bantu, Arabs and Indians, which resulted (also in) from the mixing of the population. This is how the name / word “Swahili” finds its origins in Arabic: Sahel, which means “coast, border”.
These exchanges have (in particular) given birth to many trading towns such as: Zanzibar, Mombasa, Kilwa or Mogadishu.
The popularity of Kiswahili continues to increase (its popularity) not only in Africa with over 10 countries having Kiswahili as their mother tongue or second language, but all over the world! The language is taught on 5 continents and today there are over 150 million people (who speak) of Kiswahili speakers around the world.
